The Sea by Edward Bond Scene 1 & Scene 2 Summary

Scene 1 Summary:
The play, The Sea, written by Edward Bond, starts with the cries of Willy whose boat is turned over, and he is asking for help to save his friend, Colin. The stage is set in the East Coast village of England in 1907. Due to the stormy weather and noisy sea, his cries do not go far. During his crying, a drunken man, Evens, appears on the scene. But instead of helping Willy, he remarks that it is too late to save his friend because the sea is very furious. Then, he talks rubbish because he was drunk.
Another man called Hatch who is a middle-aged tailor and coastguard appears on the scene as well. But he regards Willy an enemy instead of helping him due to his ignorance and negative mentality. He appears crazy to Willy by his conversation. Then, some heavy guns by the army of the area are heard firing at a distance. Hatch becomes happy due to his assumption that the army knows about Willy, their enemy. This scene ends with Willy searching for Colin while running through the water.
Scene 2 Summary:
In the second scene, Hatch (the tailor) is seen dealing with an upper-middle class lady, Mrs. Rafi and her friend, Mrs. Tilehouse. Hatch shows many products in his shop to Mrs. Rafi; however, she rejects most of these items. She is shown as a choosy person. Therefore, she places an order for the blue velvet for curtains and does not pick any gloves for herself. Hatch is unsure whether the lady is serious about her order or not.
Next, Mr. Willy Carson comes to the shop and meets Mrs. Rafi. She tells him that his friend, Colin, was engaged with her niece, Rose. These three visitors at the shop are sad due to the tragic event of Colin’s death. Afterwards, these people leave the shop. But Hatch appoints his friends, Hollarcut, Carter, and Thompson after Willy because he thinks Willy is an alien spy.

Edward Bond (1934–2024) was a distinguished British playwright, screenwriter, and poet. He was a member of the working class and highly self-educated. Also, he was popular for writing powerful and mostly controversial plays that discussed violence, social injustice, and human suffering. In his lifetime, he wrote more than 50 plays.
