Summary of The Crucible Act 1 Part 3:
John Proctor enters the room of Betty while searching for the servant, Mary Warren, who succeeded Abigail as a maid. Proctor is a man who is in his mid-thirties and has a stout body. John Proctor adopts an easy manner while entering the room. His manner appears easy not because he has a soul that didn’t go through any trouble. In fact, he is a sinner according to his era’s moral fashion and according to his own point of view regarding decent conduct. However, Miller, while telling the details about Proctor, states that he is respected and even feared in Salem because of his honesty. Yet, according to Miller’s character sketch, we see Proctor in a condition where he sees himself as a kind of fraud. Despite this, we don’t see any hint of his self-perception in the scene. In fact, he appears as a fully confident man in this scene who had an extra-marital affair with Abigail that he doesn’t intend to resume.
When Proctor sees Mary Warren, he scolds her for being absent from the house many times. Then, he orders her to go to his house where his wife is waiting for her. At this, Mary leaves the room. When she goes out, Mercy Lewis also leaves Betty’s room after saying that she has to go to take care of ailing Ruth. Then, only Abigail and Proctor remain present in the room with unconscious Betty who is lying on the bed. Proctor asks his previous servant about the activities they were doing in the woods that caused Salem people to talk about witchcraft so much. Abigail, while laughing in a nervous manner, states that it was only girlish fun, not witchcraft, that they were engaged in inside the forest.
It easily becomes clear from Abigail and Proctor’s conversation that their previous relationship was not merely of a master and his servant. There was more in their relationship that they were engaged into. Firstly, Proctor teases her in a sporting way; however, he soon realises that she is once again trying to be sexually attractive in front of him. Therefore, he becomes cautious after this realisation. He tells her in clear words that their previous relationship cannot be resumed. And he came here only to know about the mischief that her uncle wants to cause in the parish.
Basically, Abigail is an example of raw sexuality who becomes the tempter for John Proctor at some point in the scene. She lusts for him desperately. Also, she reminds him of their love affair before his wife terminated her job. She also asserts that he still loves her, so she tries to hug him. But Proctor doesn’t let her embrace him. With harshness and anger, she blames his wife for the change in his attitude. Then, Abigail accuses his wife, Elizabeth, of defaming her in Salem. However, he strongly admonishes her and tells her that she should not say anything against his wife. At this, Abigail bluntly says that she not only defames her but also spreads lies about her in the village. Then, John Proctor denies her accusation and refuses to have any love for her. In the end, their fight is interrupted when Betty suddenly sits up on her bed and starts screaming.
