Scene 5 Summary:
In The Sea scene 5, Hatch is present in his shop and briefs his allies, Hollarcut, Thompson, and Carter about a probable attack of aliens on their village. He believes that the newspapers have some hidden information about the aliens. According to the information, the fighting preparations were being completed by the military against the aliens from space.
Plus, Hatch believes that Evens and Willy are agents of the same space race. Hatch also states that the military exercises are not a part of routine, and these are highly serious. Yes, as there can be alien spies in the whole village, so everyone must be doubted. Then, he instructs Hollarcut to watch Evens and Willy’s moves carefully.
Afterwards, when Mrs. Rafi and Mrs. Tilehouse enter Hatch’s shop, he becomes glad on thinking that she has come to receive the order that she placed a while ago. But she refuses to accept the order by saying that she does not want to have any relation with a person who caused the death of Colin by refusing Willy’s plea for help. She tells him that Willy told them about how Hatch acted irresponsibly as a coastguard and even abused him instead of helping. She says that she would report the matter to the concerned authorities, and the village people won’t visit Hatch’s shop on learning that he is an evil man who refused to assist Willy in saving Colin at the beach.
Hatch first attempts to convince her of his innocence while she was accusing him, but on his failure, he becomes angry. He accuses in return that Willy is an agent of the aliens, and Mrs. Rafi is being used as an instrument by him.
Then, after some time, Mrs. Rafi leaves the shop with her gardener, Thompson, and curses him too for being a part of Hatch’s team before leaving. On realising that the cloth was not accepted and paid for by Mrs. Rafi, Hatch loses his mind completely. So he cuts the cloth into small pieces in his state of insanity.
Later that day, Mrs. Rafi enters Hatch’s shop again to tell him about her decision to notify the constable and doctor about his objectionable behaviour during their morning fight. On observing the cloth cutting and insane remarks from him, Mrs. Rafi and Hatch fight with each other. Mrs. Rafi gets injured as well when Hatch attacks her with his shears. But the injury is minor that she vows to take revenge for lawfully.
In the end, Hatch creates a verbally shameful scene in his complete madness for the ladies. He insanely comments on unhappened events in his shop while targeting their chastity. The scene ends when Hatch runs away from his shop, and Carter behaves well with the ladies after appearing in front of them.
