Summary of The Crucible Act 1 Part 2:
In the part 2 of the play’s Act 1, Abigail manipulates Mercy Lewis after Mr. Parris and both Putnams leave Betty’s room. She tells Mercy that she told Mr. Parris that they were just dancing in the forest for fun and nothing else. And the person who conjured up the spirits of the dead babies of Putnams is Tituba. Then, Abigail asks her about Ruth’s illness. In response, she tells Abigail that she beat Ruth somewhat to wake her up. So Abigail should do this with Betty as well to wake her up. However, Abigail doesn’t agree with Mercy to do that.

Then, Abigail comes near Betty’s bed and tells her to stop dissembling in a shaking voice, but Betty doesn’t even move. Then, Marry Warren who was extremely fearful enters the room of Betty and tells the girls that the news of witchcraft is spreading quickly in Salem. She strongly suggests them to tell the truth about their forest incident or confess what they actually did there. Otherwise, the people would call them witches soon.
Afterwards, Betty becomes conscious suddenly and sits on her bed. She hysterically runs towards the window while crying and says that she wants to meet her dead mother; however, the girls stop her from doing that. So Abigail pulls her away from the window and tells her that she told her father everything about the forest incident. The frightened girl, Betty, asks her cousin whether she told Mr. Parris that Abigail drank the blood to cause the death of Goody Proctor (her former employer) or not. Abigail hits her face to silence her and warns her to keep her mouth shut.
Abigail then terrifies all the girls in the room with the possibility of violence to keep every other detail a secret that she did not disclose in front of Mr. Parris. She tells them that they will tell the people that all girls just danced in the forest, and Tituba conjured the spirits of Ruth’s dead sisters. Nothing else should be disclosed. Abigail even intimidates them with the possibility of torture through terrifying things as she had seen the Indians who smashed her parents’ head and other evil acts done during the night time. Then, she moves towards Betty and urges her to stop sobbing and properly sit up on the bed by moving her violently. However, she becomes unconscious in her hands and lies on the bed without any movement.
